Storytime: Owls

Books

“I’m Not Cute!” by Jonathan Allen
“Wow! Said the Owl” by Tim Hopgood
“Owl Babies” by Martin Waddell

Owl in the Tree (Tune: Skip to My Lou)

Owl in the tree says, who, who, who
Owl in the tree says, who, who, who
Owl in the tree says, who, who, who
Who, who are you?

There have been a lot of new faces at storytime, this was a great way to introduce the owl theme and find out some of the new names!

Wide-Eyed Owl

There’s a wide-eyed owl
(circle your eyes with your hands)
With a pointed nose
(touch nose)

Two pointed ears
(make ears with hands)
And claws for toes
(wiggle fingers)
He lives way up in the tree
(point up)
And when he looks at you
(point to children)
He flaps his wings
(flap arms)
And says, whooo, whoo
(cup hands around mouth)

Flap Your Wings (Tune: London Bridge)

Flap you wings and fly around, fly around, fly around
Flap your wings and fly around, just like an owl

Open your eyes big and wide, big and wide, big and wide
Open your eyes big and wide, just like an owl

Land on the ground and hop along, hop along, hop along
Land on the ground and hop along, just like an owl

Turn your head and say who, who, who, who, who, who
Turn your head and say who, who, who, just like an owl

Five Little Owls

Remember – if you’re ever crunched for time you can always print out images, laminate them and put velcro on the back!

Five little owls on a dark, dark night
Five little owls are quite a sight.
Five little owls, are you keeping score?
One flies away and that leaves four

Four little owls as happy as can be
One flew away and that leaves three

Three little owls calling who who who
One flies away and that leaves two

Two little owls having lots of fun
One flew away and that leaves one

One little owl and we’re almost done
He flies away and that leaves none

How it Went: “I’m Not Cute!” and “Owl Babies” are two of my favorite picture books and I love finding excuses to use them in storytime. This storytime was full of little owls hooting and flapping around.
