Storytime: Colors

Books

“Mouse Paint” by Ellen Still Walsh
“Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?” by Bill Martin Jr.

Dog’s Colorful Day by Emma Dodd Flannel Board

I read this book along with the flannel board I created a while back, if there are not a lot of children I actually give each child a dot to put on the dog.

Color Rhyme

If your clothes have any red,
Put your finger on your head.

If your clothes have any blue,
Put your finger on your shoe,

If your clothes have any green,
Wave your hand so that you’re seen.

If your clothes have any yellow,
Smile like a happy fellow,

If your clothes have any brown,
Turn your smile into a frown,

If your clothes have any black,
Put your hands behind your back.

If your clothes have any white,
Stamp your feet with all your might.

One Bright Scarf (Tune: Ten Little Fingers)

One bright scarf waiting for the wind to blow (hold scarf)
Wiggle it high (wiggle scarf above head)
Wiggle it low (wiggle scarf low)
Shake it fast (wiggle scarf quickly)
Shake it slow (wiggle scarf slowly)
Where did it go? (put it behind your back)

Baa, Baa, Black Sheep

My coworker created sheep in a variety of color and bags with matching wool, I had a volunteer pass out one bag to each child, the child then brought the bag of wool up when their color was called.

Baa, baa, black sheep,
Have you any wool?
Yes sir, yes sir,
Three bags full

One for the master,
One for the dame,
And one for the little boy

Who lives down the lane.

Baa, baa, black sheep,
Have you any wool?
Yes sir, yes sir,
Three bags full.

(repeat with other colors)

The Color I See

Red, red is the color I see
If you’re wearing red, then show it to me.
Stand up, take a bow, turn around
Show me your red and sit back on the ground

(repeat with other colors)

How it Went: Tonight I covered for a coworker and didn’t realize I would be in charge of a family storytime. I had to whip something up and decided to go with “colors” because I knew I could easily find books. Here is the results of my last minute story time! I must say this was one of the most successful storytimes I have ever had (even though it was so unplanned). The parents and children really got into the songs and activities to the point where we would repeat them more than once, we didn’t even have time for the last song! The kids (and even some parents) loved to look at their clothes and shoes and see what colors they were wearing, the children were so excited to participate every time I called out a color they had on. This is definitely a story time theme I would use again.
