Storytime: Pets

Today’s storytime was all about pets but since I have a younger crowd who mainly has cats or dogs I decided to stick to those. This was also the perfect time to bring out my new puppets from Folkmanis Puppets! I recently bought a bunch of puppets from Folkmanis Puppets and am beyond excited to use them. I especially love using them with the babies and toddlers, they get so excited to give our new storytime puppet a hug.

Five Little Kittens

Five little kittens standing in a row
(hold up 5 fingers)
They nod their heads to the children so
(bend fingers)
They run to the left
(move hand to the left)
They run to the right
(move hand to the right)
They stand up and stretch in the big sunlight
(hold up 5 fingers)
Along comes a dog, who’s looking for some fun
(whisper, make fist with other hand)
(have fist quickly move towards fingers)
(hide fingers behind back)
See those five kittens run

Where is Big Cat? (Tune: Where is Thumbkin)

Where is big cat, where is big cat?
(hide thumbs behind back)
Here I am, here I am
(bring thumbs out front)
How are you today cat?
(wiggle 1 thumb)
Very well I thank you
(wiggle other thumb)
Meow, meow, meow
(hide 1 thumb behind back)
Meow, meow, meow
(hide other thumb)

I recently attended a storytime workshop that said talked about the importance of letter recognition. They suggested to encourage letter recognition you should take away the O first, this way the last letter remaining is B. Before we sang the song we talked about letter B and I informed parents about the importance of letter recognition.

There was a farmer who had a dog
And Bingo was his name-o
And Bingo was his name-o

(repeat until you are clapping for all of the letters)

Dog’s Colorful Day by Emma Dodd

How it Went: Singing BINGO backwards was a little harder than anticipated, I completely understand why we should leave the letter B until the end but it was hard for parents, kids and myself to do it that way. I think if I continue to use it in storytime they will get used to it. Per usual “Dog’s Colorful Day” was a hit!
