Storytime: Spring

Books

“Wake Up, It’s Spring” by Lisa Campbell Ernst
“Spring is Here” by Will Hillenbrand
“Mouse’s First Spring” by Lauren Thompson

Where is Bear? (tune: Where is Thumbkin)

Where is bear? Where is bear?
(hide thumbs behind back)
Here I am. Here I am.
(bring thumbs out front)
How are you this winter
(wiggle one thumb)
Very tired, thank you
(wiggle other thumb)
Go to sleep. Go to sleep
(turn thumbs on their side and snore)

But it’s Spring! What should we say to bear?
WAKE UP!

During the Spring

During the spring it often showers
(flutter fingers down)
Or the sun shines for many hours
(circle arms over head)
Both are good for the flowers
(cup hands and extend out arms)

Ten Little Flowers

1 little, 2 little, 3 little flowers
4 little, 5 little, 6 little flowers
7 little, 8 little, 9 little flowers
10 little flowers in the Spring

Give them rain and lots of sunshine
(wiggle fingers down, circle arms over head)
Give them rain and lots of sunshine
Give them rain and lots of sunshine
So they’ll grow up big and tall

Two Little Butterflies

Two little butterflies sitting on a hill
One named Jack and one named Jill
Fly away Jack, fly away Jill
Come back Jack, come back Jill

(repeat with)

sitting on a cloud, Soft and Loud
sitting on a stick, Slow and Quick
flying in the sky, Low and High

Butterfly Colors

The first to come to the garden bed
Is a lovely butter of brilliant red

Then in comes another and that makes two
Fly right in, my friend of blue

“The garden is fine, the best I’ve seen”
Say the butterfly of softest green

Our garden needs a sunny fellow,
Fly on in, butterfly with wings of yellow

Little friend of purple fly in too
The garden is waiting for a color like you

Orange, orange you’ve waited so long
Fly right in, where you belong

Butterflies, butterflies you’re such a sight
Flying together what a delight

In the Spring (tune: Mary had a Little Lamb)

Sway your arms in the Spring, in the Spring, in the Spring
Sway your arms in the Spring, a happy time of year

(repeat with)

Wiggle your toes
Shrug your shoulders
Stomp your feet

How it Went: It’s finally starting to feel like Spring! We had some last minute late Winter/early Spring snow storms and it was starting to get dreary. The books today were a huge hit, children loved snoring while we read “Spring is Here” and they loved guessing what mouse saw in “Mouse’s First Spring.” The butterflies were also popular, we ended up counting them and talking more about their colors because no one wanted them to be put away. Happy Spring!
