Storytime: Rain

Books

“Move Over, Rover” by Karen Beaumont
“Raindrop Plop” by Wendy Cheyette Lewison
“Rain” by Manya Stojic

Five Little Raindrops (tune: Itsy Bitsy Spider)

Five little raindrops
(hold up 5 fingers)
Dancing on the walk
(wiggle fingers down)
Pitter patter, pitter patter, that’s the way they talk
(pat thighs)
Out comes the yellow sun, shining in the sun
(circle arms overhead)
And away goes one raindrop
Bye, bye, bye
(wave)

(count down)

Raindrop Guessing Game

For this game I put up the umbrellas and we talked about each color. Then I had children close their eyes while I hid a raindrop under one of the umbrellas. Since I had so many children I counted to 3 and then had them yell what color umbrella they think the raindrop is under. If I had a smaller group I would ask each child individually.

Five Umbrellas

Five umbrellas stood by the back door
The red one went outside, then there were four
Four umbrellas stood pretty as can be
The blue one went outside, then there were three
Three umbrellas stood with nothing to do
The green one went outside, then there were two
Two umbrellas stood watching for the sun
The yellow one went outside, then there was one
Just one umbrella stood alone in the hall
The white one went outside and then that was all

The Rain is Falling Down (tune: Ants go Marching)

The rain is falling down in drops
(wiggle fingers down)
Drip drop, drip drop
(pat thighs)
The rain is falling down in drops
Drip drop, drip drop
The rain is falling down in drops
We can’t play until it stops
(waggle finger side to side)
Oh the rain is falling down
To the ground
Where it makes lots of mud
Squish, squish, squish
(tap floor)

We’re Stomping in the Rain (tune: Farmer in the Dell)

We’re stomping in the rain
We’re stomping in the rain
We can’t go yet, we must get wet
We’re stomping in the rain

(clapping, jumping, turning)

How it Went: I actually ended up doing this story time 4 times! The theme was so popular at the library’s storytime that I ended up using it at local daycare centers. The guessing game was a big hit, we ended up doing it 3 times and children wanted to keep playing. It also worked really well because every time I did this storytime it just so happened to be raining!
