Storytime: Birds

Books

“Hooray for Birds” by Lucy Cousins
“Feathers for Lunch” by Lois Ehlert
“Birds” by Kevin Henkes

For “Feathers for Lunch” I brought out a cat puppet with a bell tied around his neck and a bird finger puppet. I acted out the book while I read it and the kids really loved it (especially when the bird gets away)!

Two Little Blackbirds

Two little blackbirds sitting on a hill
One named Jack and one named Jill

Fly away Jack, fly away Jill
Come back Jack, come back Jill

Two little blackbirds sitting on pole
One named Fast and one named Slow
Fly away Fast, fly away Slow
Come back Fast, come back Slow

Two little blackbirds sitting on a cloud
One named Quiet and one named Loud
Fly away Quiet, fly away Loud
Come back Quiet, come back Loud

See, See, See

See, see, see (shade eyes)
Three birds are in a tree (hold up 3 fingers)
One can chirp (wiggle thumb)
One can sing (wiggle index finger)
And one is just a tiny thing (wiggle pinkie)

Five Feathered Birds

Five feathered birds sitting at the door,
One flew away and then there were four.
Four feathered birds singing in a tree,
One flew away and then there were three.
Three feathered birds looking at you,
One flew away and then there were two.
Two feathered birds sitting in the sun,
One flew away and then there was one.
One feathered bird looking like a hero,
He flew away and now there are zero.

There’s a Bird in the Air

We played with egg shakers and pretended they were birds. The “birds” would fly and land on the parts of our body.

There’s a bird in the air, in the air
There’s a bird in the air, in the air
There’s a bird in the air, now he’s flying in my hair

There’s a bird on my leg, on my leg
There’s a bird on my leg, on my leg
There’s a bird on my leg and he is pretty big

There’s a bird on my hand, on my hand
There’s a bird on my hand, on my hand
There’s a bird on my hand but now he is my friend

I Know a Chicken by Laurie Berkner Band (with egg shakers)

How it Went: I did this storytime to several local preschools and it was a huge hit. Children really enjoyed the books and (of course) loved playing with the egg shakers. I will definitely be doing a bird storytime again in the future.
