Storytime: Pirates

Books

“Bubble Bath Pirates” by Jarrett J. Krosoczka
“Sheep on a Ship” by Nancy Shaw
“Pirate Nap” by Danna Smith

Ten Little Pirates

Ten little pirates stood in a row
(hold up 10 fingers)
They bowed to their captain so
(lower and raise fingers)
They marched to the left
(move hands to the left)
And they marched to the right
(move hands to the right)
They shouted yo-ho
(cup hands over mouth)
And gave their captain a fright
(put hands on cheeks and gasp)

Pirate’s Hat

I passed out different colored hats to each child. When I sang a color children with that color came up to the board. I have quite a few twos so I explained to parents that this is us working on taking turns, being patient and following directions. The parents were great at helping the children listen for their color.

The pirate wore a red hat, a red hat, a red hat
The pirate wore a red hat, all day long

(repeat with other colors)

Pirate Song by Andy Z

We used scarves to dance around and do the actions (lean, jump, etc).

If You’re a Pirate and You Know It

If you’re a pirate and you know it just say ARRGH
If you’re a pirate and you know it just say ARRGH
If you’re a pirate and you know it then your face will surely show it
If you’re a pirate and you know it just say ARRGH

(…swab the deck)
(…walk the plank)

How it Went: I was a little hesitant about the books, they aren’t as interactive as I typically like but the kids loved them! They sat so well for all three books and were intrigued by them. The songs and flannel board were a hit, they love when they can come up to the flannel board. I would definitely do a pirate themed storytime again.
