Candy Sushi

Anything with candy is always a big hit! For this program I walked tweens/teens through 3 different types of candy sushi, then I had them try to make the neatest sushi and the most creative. With the remaining time (and candy) they made their own sushi (or just ate it). This program quickly filled up and was a lot of fun, it is one I will definitely do again.

Supplies

  • Rice krispies treats
  • Fruit rolls
  • Jumbo marshmallows
  • Swedish fish
  • Gummy worms
  • Gummy bears
  • Twizzlers
  • Napkins
  • Paper plates
  • Wax paper
  • Plastic knives

Please note that you can use a variety of candy. Listed above is what I used but you can use any type of gummy candy. I made the rice krispies treats at home the night before the program. I used a standard recipe, put it on wax paper and rolled it thin using a rolling pin. I then cut them into large rectangles.

Sushi #1

  1. Lay fruit roll on top of the rice krispies treat and cut a piece the size of the fruit roll
  2. Flip it over so the fruit roll is on the bottom and the rice krispies treat is on top
  3. Place 1 or 2 gummy worms or twizzlers on the rice krispies treat
  4. Roll the rice krispies treat/fruit roll until the ends meet

Sushi #2

  1. Push a hole in the middle of a marshmallow
  2. Place gummy bears or twizzlers into the hole
  3. Wrap fruit roll around the marshmallow

Sushi #3

  1. Cut a rectangular piece of rice krispies treat
  2. Place Swedish fish on top
  3. Wrap fruit roll around the Swedish fish
Creative candy sushi

What I would have changed: I put out all of the candy to start, this (of course) led to them eating the candy before we used it. I had extra candy in anticipation of this but didn’t expect just how much they would eat (I witnessed a whole fruit roll being shoved into someone’s mouth). The next time around I would give candy out as we used it and then handed out what was left. Also, voting on the neatest and most creative was a popularity contest. Moving forward I would have them make their candy sushi, tell everyone about it but I would not have them vote.
