Storytime: Bunnies/Rabbits

Books

“The Little Rabbit Who Liked to Say Moo” by Jonathan Allen
“What Does Bunny See?” by Linda Sue Park
“Will You Be My Friend?” by Nancy Tafuri

Here is a Bunny

Here is a bunny with ears so funny
(hold up 2 fingers like bunny ears)
And here is a hole in the ground
(make circle with other hand)
At the first sound he hears, he pricks up his ears
And hops in the hole in the ground
(jump bunny ears into the circle)

White Rabbit’s Color Book by Alan Baker

I did not read the complete story but instead told it off of memory. I set up 3 colored buckets and a small tin one. I picked them up from the dollar store. I set the buckets on a cart and stood up to tell the story. I asked children to stay seated because you don’t want them to see what is inside the buckets. I got this idea from Sunflower Storytime, she has a great cheat sheet for the story and set up here. Be prepared to receive several gasps and yells of “it’s magic!”

Five Little Bunnies

Five little bunnies hopping down the trail
1 fell down and bumped her tail
Mama called the doctor – what did she say?
No more bunnies hopping today!

(count down)

If You’re a Bunny and You Know It

If you’re a bunny and you know it, hop around
If you’re a bunny and you know it, hop around
If you’re a bunny and you know it and you really want to show it
If you’re a bunny and you know it, hop around

(shake your tail)
(flop your ears)
(wiggle your nose)

Craft – Bunny Mask

I think parents enjoyed this craft more than the kids. I encourage parents to let children make each project their own but found that with this one parents really took over. Even though the children didn’t do much for this craft they still enjoyed it and liked putting their faces in the mask.

How it Went: I was going for a somewhat Spring/Easter themed storytime without any religious aspects and thought bunnies/rabbits was perfect. The storytime was a huge hit with the preschool age group. Their favorite book was “The Little Rabbit Who Liked to Say Moo” and they were so quiet and intrigued during “White Rabbit’s Color Book.” I will be honest and say that this storytime was a flop with the toddler group. I’m not sure if they were having a rough day but everyone seemed antsy and had no interest in the stories. Their favorite part was when I took out a spider puppet to try and encourage them to participate.
